Charlotte
Charlotte’s orthopedist told her she needed a shoulder replacement. She had been living with severe shoulder pain and had reached the point where surgery seemed like the only path forward. Before scheduling the procedure, she heard about Boston Prolotherapy on her favorite Boston sports radio station and asked her physical therapist about it. The physical therapist confirmed Dr. Franchi’s reputation and encouraged her to call.
She came to Dr. Franchi, who examined her and determined that the underlying problem was structural – damaged soft tissue that prolotherapy could address. After a course of treatment, she avoided the shoulder replacement entirely. Charlotte is pain-free and has full range of motion.
Her story is not unusual at Boston Prolotherapy. Many patients arrive having been told surgery is their only option, only to find after a thorough evaluation that the root cause is ligament or tendon damage that typically responds well to prolotherapy.

Dan
Dan had been hard on his body through years of military service and competitive sports. By the time he came to Dr. Franchi, he had bone-on-bone knee arthritis – one of the more advanced presentations of joint deterioration. Most physicians would have pointed him toward knee replacement. Instead, after a few prolotherapy injections, Dan was able to run a seven-mile race.
His case illustrates something Dr. Franchi sees regularly: patients with osteoarthritis who are told their cartilage is too far gone for anything but replacement often have significant ligament laxity as a contributing factor. When the ligaments are tightened and stabilized through prolotherapy, the joint mechanics improve – reducing pain even in cases where the cartilage itself cannot be fully restored.

Kara
Kara came to Dr. Franchi after rotator cuff surgery had not resolved her shoulder pain. She found Boston Prolotherapy through a Google search and learned that her situation – persistent pain following surgical intervention – is exactly the kind of case where prolotherapy can help. Surgical repair addresses structural damage, but if the surrounding ligaments and tendons remain unstable, pain and limited mobility often persist.
After her first prolotherapy injection, Kara felt major pain relief. By the end of treatment, she had full shoulder flexibility, was sleeping through the night, and was pain-free. She now recommends prolotherapy as an alternative to surgery – and, in her case, as a solution for pain that surgery alone did not fix.

-
Rick
Rick had suffered from back problems for 29 years. He had tried everything – including surgery. Nothing had produced lasting relief. When he found Dr. Franchi and Boston Prolotherapy, he was skeptical. After prolotherapy treatment, he felt great and pain-free.
His case reflects one of the most common patterns Dr. Franchi sees: patients whose back pain has been attributed to herniated disks or other structural problems, when the actual driver is sacroiliac instability or interspinous ligament laxity. These are conditions that don’t always show up clearly on MRI and are frequently misdiagnosed – and both respond well to prolotherapy. Boston Prolotherapy has an 80–90% success rate treating back pain from sacroiliac and interspinous ligament causes.
